A.W. Tozer spoke of the “Vacuum of Desire” for spiritual things that seem so uncommon in the believer today. It was the deep, insatiable, hungering and thirsting of the believer that Jesus said would be filled and the panting of the deer after the water that the psalmist indicated would find refreshment. But that kind of craving for the things of God is woefully lacking in most of us today.
Most would gladly receive a spiritual blessing or a Divine encounter if it was conveniently painless and easily attained. Who would reject a fresh impartation of God’s Spirit or revelatory Word that cost nothing? But the truth is there is no vacuum of desire in our hearts. We crave for many things, desiring to experience much the world has to offer and our passion for the things of God is at best a numbered priority on our “to do” list or yet worse, a forgotten endeavor of days gone by.
We must empty ourselves of earthly desires. A vacuum of desire that can only be filled with the gracious presence of His Spirit must be developed. Then, we will be on our way to new heights of victory and new plains of spiritual depth.
