Many lonely and restless nights are spent by sincere believers who have had to face the harsh reality that life is not fair and sometimes is quite painful. I am certain that all great men and women of God throughout all time have felt just that way. One in particular that comes to mind is Peter.
How often he must have felt so all alone. He was a man of great passion but often that passion served only to get him in trouble. Whether it was the boisterous promise that he couldn’t keep, the daring but foolish heroics he tried to perform, the shallow faith that landed him in the depths of the sea, or the reoccurring failure to discern God’s will, Peter had ample opportunities to find himself alone and despondent about his sinfulness, unconquerable carnality, and unchecked humanity. I often wonder how many times Peter must have considered giving up….just like we do.
But Peter remembered the words of Jesus, “I am praying for you.” And so, one lonely and restless night, by the light of the candlestick, he reminded himself and all of us who would follow, that in moments like that we must “cast our anxiety on Him, because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
We are not alone. We may be restless, find ourselves in the dark, and think no one cares, but the One who is praying for us invites us to cast all of our cares on Him.
