The exhortation of the Psalmist to “be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), is not a call to silence or contemplative spirituality. It is rather a reminder to trust. Those who wrongly teach that our ability to place ourselves in an almost trance-like state of quietness in order to achieve great spiritual results not only flirt with heretical teaching that exalts humanity; but they miss the clear point of the Psalmist to “be still” more correctly translated in the NASV as “cease striving.” Quit trying to make things happen yourself and let God be God in your life. That is the powerful reminder of the Psalmist.
What are you striving to accomplish? What spiritual mountain are you trying to climb in your own strength? If won’t be your striving or even your spiritual and contemplative posturing that will accomplish this thing in your life. Be still! Stop striving and know that He, the creator and sustainer of the universe is God!

...Okay God, I get it!
ReplyDeleteSo true- only God can move the mountains! We must be "still" and let Him do the moving because we cannot.
ReplyDeleteDear Pastor
ReplyDeleteI like very much your thought that to be still and know is a 'reminder' to TRUST.
It reminds me of what Moses once said:
"Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD,...The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent."-Ex 14:13-14 ESV
Thanks for the 'reminder'!
