Mercy Triumphs over Judgment

One of the great trademarks of a maturing believer is the way in which they handle their critics and respond to criticism. So often we are tempted, and in fact yield to the temptation of judgment, self-vindication, or critical retaliation. James warns his readers of the peril of such an attitude. “For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy” (James 2:13a). If we fail to show mercy to our adversaries, we ourselves should not expect to enjoy mercy.

The second half of James’ warning speaks volumes as it calls believers to emulate the One, who even when falsely accused and Himself being sinless, spoke not a word against His accusers…. “mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:16). Certainly looking to Him as our example and model provides great strength and resolve to graciously respond to those who oppose us. Does criticism lead us to immediate anger, resentment, and bitterness? Do we rush to protect ourselves or criticize the critic? Whenever we measure ourselves by the standards of Christ, our righteousness pales in comparison to the shabbiness of our hearts that are before us. Then we say with the author, “Boasting excluded pride I abase; I’m only a sinner, saved by grace.” -James M. Gray

May we like Christ model mercy that triumphs over judgment.
