The Master of the Sea

The Psalmist, the author of Proverbs 8, and the prophet Jeremiah all speak of God’s great, powerful, and authoritative influence over the vast enemy and force of the oceans. But when God Himself elaborates on that theme in His rebuke of Job, He leaves no stone unturned in articulating His absolute control and sovereign sway over the creation.

“Or who enclosed the sea with doors when bursting forth, it went out from the womb; when I made a cloud its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and I placed boundaries on it and set a bolt and doors, and I said, “Thus far you shall come, but no farther; and here shall your proud waves stop? (Job 38:8-11 NASB)

He describes the waters creation as solely His work and its realm of influence at His command. “Thus far you shall come, but no farther” (Job 38:11). Having just spent 10 days in the ocean or on its shore, that statement has new meaning. The oceans roar with mighty strength, it’s waves have power to move vessels, overwhelm creatures, and pound away at the shore set as its boundary; and yet, it can do no more than the Master of the Sea allows!

In your storm, the waters can only go as far as He allows. They cannot trespass His command. He needs only to speak the word, “Peace, be still” and calm can come into any situation.

Prayer: Lord, either calm the storm around me or teach me to be calm in the midst of my storm.
