What is the upward call of God in Christ? What is the goal for which I am to strive? What high and lofty hope am I to bring all my energies to bear upon? Paul seems to describe it in a four-fold manner.
“That I may gain Christ.” “Gain Christ!” What can it mean but to gain His smile, His approval, His welcome commendation? “And be found in Him.” The point here is that I have ceased with my foolish attempts to earn righteousness and have simply rested in His! "That I may know Him!” May I have my eyes opened, my heart enlarged, and my comprehension expanded that I may know Him more fully. “And being made conformable to Him.” As I gain Him, rest in Him, come to know Him; I will become like Him! But I must forget the lame and empty dreams and experiences of my past that never satisfy and press on to the upward call of God in Christ!
