Luke 6:45 says that out of the good treasure of our heart we bring forth good fruit and conversely evil from an evil heart. The heart is deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9) and can convince us that it is well intentioned, sincere, honest and well-meaning and all the while, be self-serving, manipulative and full of pride. The writer of Proverbs pleads with his readers to “guard their hearts, for from it flows all of life’s issues.”
Praying, as did David, for a clean heart and daily allowing the Holy Spirit to break it may be the only way to ensure that our work and ministry flows from a pure heart. At times, the chastening of the Lord may be to break our hearts so that broken; they may be used to bring forth fruit that is sincere, holy and selfless.
